Romy vitug biography meaning

Romeo “Romy” Vitug was the first Filipino cinematographer who was billed in screen credits as Director of Photography. Until that time, they were all called cinematographers. But Romy deserves the honor given his outstanding body of work in Philippine movies.     

Born on January 27, 1937 in Floridablanca, Pampanga, his parents were Honesto and Esperanza Vitug.

His mother’s maiden name was also Vitug since she and Honesto were third cousins.     

Although Honesto was considered the dean of photographers, he didn’t want Romy to pursue the same profession.

Honesto wanted Romy to have a more significant place in this world.     

Not that photography was a lowly profession. After all, Honesto’s job as a photographer put food on the table. But then as now, the photographer always played second fiddle to the reporter, who gets all the glory at every news coverage.
